The first Investec Test match of the summer lasted just three days as England outclassed Sri Lanka at Headingley. Alastair Cooks side romped to victory by an innings and 88 runs with Jonny Bairstow hitting a first Test century on home soil and James Anderson taking 10-45 in the match, as an inexperienced Sri Lanka batting line up struggled in bowler-friendly conditions. Here are just some of the things we learned from a one-sided encounter in Leeds… Jimmys an England great James Anderson has now taken 443 Test match wickets Englands swing king moved up to sixth on the all-time list of Test wicket-takers following a stunning showing on a ground he has previously struggled at. His second of 10 wickets in the match saw him go past Kapil Devs 434 wickets and, with 443 of his own, the Englishman now has just two seamers ahead of him - Glenn McGrath (563) and Courtney Walsh (519).As such it is surely safe to talk about Anderson as one of Englands greats, at the very least. 2005 Ashes winner Steve Harmison certainly thinks so.James Anderson has to be talked about as one of the greats of our game, he told Sky Sports. McGrath finished when he was 36, Walsh when he was 38, so of course Anderson, at only 33, can keep going and pass both of them. They are two of the best fast bowlers of all time, so people have got to be looking now and saying that Anderson is in that same league.Bairstow here to stay Jonny Bairstow scored his second Test century at Headingley Given the way he has batted since coming back into the Test side midway through last summers Ashes, it is a surprise that it has taken until now for Bairstow to really cement his place in the England team.Indeed, during his time with England his ability has been questioned, but over the past year, the Yorkshireman has been excellent. So good, in fact, that few batsmen in world cricket can match his first class record since the beginning of last summer. Now, having recorded his maiden Test century at Cape Town over the winter, he has added a second, on his home ground. It was a remarkable innings in that while others toiled in the toughest of conditions for batsmen, Bairstow never looked troubled. He scored a good rate and transformed the England innings before eventually falling for 140. The critics have been answered and Bairstow, it seems, is going nowhere.Headingley hoodoo over England and Anderson had a poor record at Headingley before the first Test As much as England headed into the match as clear favourites, much of the talk beforehand was of the hosts less than stellar record at Headingley in recent times.A record of just one win, a draw and five defeats, including the dramatic loss to Sri Lanka in 2014, in Leeds since victory over the West Indies in 2007 hardly inspired confidence. On top of that, Anderson and Stuart Broad had both spoken of difficulties at the ground - the former averaged close to 40 before this match - in the build-up.However, Cook and his team will hope that any such issues can be put to bed after the most convincing of wins in which a change of ends saw a dramatic upturn in fortunes for his opening bowlers.Glimmers of hope for Sri Lanka Kusal Mendis maiden Test fifty was a bright spot for Sri Lanka All in all, it was a dismal three days for Sri Lanka. Having made early inroads to reduce England to 83-5 soon after lunch on day one, they let their hosts off the hook before twice collapsing horribly with the bat.Despite that, there was the odd bright spot for Angelo Mathews and his team to cling onto going into the second Test.All-rounder Dasun Shanaka was brought in more for his batting than his bowling but showed that he could have an important role to play with the ball as he took three quick wickets on the opening morning. His ability to move the ball through the air and off the pitch could prove very useful in English conditions. With the bat, Kusal Mendis showed promise at No 3. There was little he could do about a beauty from Broad that accounted for him in the first innings, and in the second he showed no fear as he produced a wide array of shots to reach his maiden half-century in Test cricket.Hales can cut it Alex Hales battled his way to 86 in tough conditions The Nottinghamshire opener came into this series under pressure to perform after struggling to make an impact in South Africa over the winter.England stuck with him though and Hales showed that he is more than willing to fight for his place at the top of the order with a gritty knock of 86 in treacherous conditions for batting (unless you are Jonny Bairstow). It was a quite out-of-character innings by Alex Hales, who you expect to be looking to hit fours and sixes all the time but he left the ball pretty well, said Bob Willis. Youve got to hand it to him for the way he played.Having shown he is capable, the challenge for Hales now is to maintain the same level of application for the rest of the series and beyond. And I said, But you dont know me. And he says, Yeah but I dont like work stoppages, and I go, Well neither do I, so we have that in common.Bettman will forever take a popularity hit for three lockouts during his tenure, but he wont apologize for them. Ten years after the league ground to a halt and the 2004-05 season was cancelled, he maintains it was necessary for the health of the sport.Pointing to the 04 Stanley Cup final between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Calgary Flames in which the team to score the first goal won each game of the series and contrasting that with the 2013 playoffs and its unpredictability, Bettman believes the on-ice product is better than ever.To get to this point, though, Bettman said implementing the salary cap a€” which came out of the 2004-05 lockout a€” was essential. We had teams with 80-, 90 million-dollar payrolls and we had teams with 20-million-dollar payrolls, Bettman said at a recent Canadian Club luncheon. And I would talk to the managers and coaches of the 20-million-dollar teams and go, How are you doing this? And they would say to me, to a man, We clutch, we grab, we hook, we hold and we do everything possible to neutralize skill for 50 minutes and then we try to steal the game. That is why the game as it was being played in the late 90s and early 2000s wasnt nearly as good as it is today. In his 21-plus years as the first official commissioner of the NHL, Bettman has overseen expansion, change and booming business. In the process he has also become a popular target for fans because he has shown a willingness to sacrifice games to affect the kind of change he and the owners want. The game was unhealthy, the competitiveness wasnt there, Bettman said of the 2004-05 lockout. We did what we had to do to not have six, eight or 10 years of a mess. We go through these things not because we want to but because we have to get to a point where the game can be healthy. Now that its healthy, Bettman doesnt look like an executive on the way out. When Bud Selig steps down and Rob Manfred takes over Major League Baseball, Bettman will officially be the longest-tenured commissioner in North American professional sports a€” tthough he insists because Selig previously had an interim tag that he already is.dddddddddddd will be the oldest when he steps down, said Bettman, who says he hasnt considered any kind of a succession plan. Im still trying to figure out how I got to be 62 years old.Bettman said on multiple occasions during a public interview with George Stroumboulopoulos at the Canadian Club luncheon and in a sit-down with The Canadian Press that he loves his job and the people associated with it. After he hands out the Cup each June, the New Yorker wonders What do I do with myself at night with no games? and insists he hasnt thought about how long he wants to remain in his post. Its as long as Im happy and excited and energized as I am today, Bettman said. If I ever reach the point where Im not, then I need to let somebody else do it. But its a joint decision. Its the owners and its me. But I love what I do and I come to work excited and energized every day.NFL counterpart Roger Goodell is going through a crisis period amid criticism of how he has handled domestic violence and child abuse cases in his league. NBA counterpart Adam Silver recently forced Donald Sterling to sell the Los Angeles Clippers after racist audio recordings surfaced, and the Atlanta Hawks are going through a similar process.Selig, like Bettman remembered for games not played because of the 1994 strike that cancelled the World Series, has a legacy tied to an era of performance-enhancing drugs but also introduced revenue sharing.Pending concussion lawsuits, particularly in light of the deaths of Wade Belak, Derek Boogaard and Rick Rypien, look like the NHLs biggest concern. But Bettman has pointed to the league creating concussion study groups well before the NFL or any other sports league. On the ice, Bettman called last season the best in an almost 100-year history and expects this one to be even better. On a personal level, he doesnt know when, or if, he hit his stride in this job but is proud of where the league is.The game is growing and the game both from a business standpoint and more importantly on the ice has never been healthier, Bettman said. If thats a measure of my stride, then were moving at a pretty good pace. ...Its an honour for me to be associated with the game.
