BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Dominik Hasek and Ted Nolan shook hands, talked and put years of bad blood behind them. The all-star goaltender and the head coach met the first time Friday since a falling out 17 years ago cost Nolan his job with the Buffalo Sabres. Nolan was brought back to coach the Sabres earlier this season, and Hasek is being inducted into the teams hall of fame Saturday night. The six-time Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender was at First Niagara Center Friday, and the two former adversaries appeared to have put their past problems behind them with what Nolan called a "nice chat." "I still dont know what really transpired back then," Nolan said. "But back then is back then. He looks well, and hes all happy and excited about being back here and we had a nice talk. We had some good times. Everybody looks at even one incident, and one incident doesnt form a relationship. "In the media I guess sometimes we blow things way out of proportion and make it look worse than it really was, and it wasnt that much. People have disagreements all the time." Hasek, who spoke to reporters before Nolan, didnt deny there were disagreements between him and his former coach back in 1997, when the goaltender pulled himself from one game claiming a knee injury and later deemed himself not healthy enough to start another. "Whatever happened, what can I say about it?" Hasek said. "Sometimes you feel different way than the other person, sometimes you feel that your decision is better than his decisions. But I think on the ice that one or two years that we were together we done a good job for this organization." Under Nolan, and with Hasek between the pipes, the Sabres went from last place in 1995-96 to first in 1996-97. That second season Nolan won the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year, and Hasek won the Hart Trophy as league MVP and Vezina Trophy as the top goaltender. "If you look what Dominik did for this organization and even when my time was here -- we had a lot of wins, but a lot of wins were based on his goaltending," Nolan said. "Hes a world-class goaltender." Being a world-class goaltender is in Haseks past, and now hes more than ready to push aside past problems with Nolan to focus on the present. "Ted Nolan, he was my coach," the 49-year-old said. "I know there was some questions (about) the relationship between me and him, but what can I say? I believe hes the coach right now and he will help the team to improve. ... I wish him good luck to improve the Sabres." Castro hit a grand slam and Collin McHugh threw seven solid innings, leading the Houston Astros to a 4-2 victory over the Texas Rangers. Castro ended an 0-for-20 slump with a single in the second. In the fifth, he wiped out Texas 2-0 lead with his second career grand slam. "I feel like Ive been feeling pretty good and have been hitting the ball, just not getting any luck," Castro said. "This one was nice to have, especially at this point of the year." Jose Altuve singled in the Houston fifth and Chris Carter walked, finishing starter Nick Tepesch. Dexter Fowler reached on an infield single to set up Castros 13th homer, a drive to right against Ramon Mendez (0-1). "Hes been working extremely hard," Houston manager Bo Porter said of Castro. "And for him to be the guy that came up with that big hit there its obviously good for the team and obviously good for his confidence." McHugh (7-9) allowed two runs and eight hits while improving to 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA in his last four starts. "It was one of those nights where I felt like it could have gone either way the whole night any inning," McHugh said. "I felt like we started to find a groove a little bit the fifth, sixth, seventh." In his six August starts, McHugh gave up eight runs over 37 2-3 innings. Josh Fields pitched the eighth and Tony Sipp worked the ninth for his second save. Texas manager Ron Washington said Tepesch, who lasted 4 1-3 innings, was labouring the whole game. "He had struggled from pitch one," Washington said. "That inning there we got to the middle of the order, and I just felt like we needed to shut that inning down, but Mendez just couldnt get it done." Adduci was removed as a precaution in the fifth for Daniel Robertson. Adduci said his back hit first, and then he had a bit of whiplash. He said he was day to day. "It happened so fast," Adduci said. "It was like boom, and I am on my back laying there. Everything was quick." TRAINERS ROOM Rangers: OF Shin-Soo Choo will have surgery on Friday to remove a bone spur from his left elbow. He is expected to be able to return to baseball activities for workouts by Nov. 1. ... BATTING TITLE CHASE Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre entered Thursday batting .326 and in third place for the American League batting title behind Houstons Jose Altuve (.332) and Detroits Victor Martinez (.327). When asked if he thought he could win the title, Beltre said: "No chance," before raving about Altuve and Martinez. He also said its hard to care about those things considering the tough season the team has had. "What is good about this year," he asked when asked about his good performance.
