HAMILTON, Ont. -- Justin Hickman couldnt have picked a better time to rejoin the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The international defensive end re-signed with Hamilton on Wednesday following two seasons with the NFLs Indianapolis Colts. The move came just before the Ticats revealed that Canadian defensive tackle Brian Bulcke will require season-ending surgery for a torn bicep. The loss of the six-foot-four, 285-pound Bulcke is a big one for Hamilton. The 27-year-old native of Windsor, Ont., is not only a starter for the Ticats but as a Canadian he gives the CFL club the flexibility to play an American elsewhere in the lineup. With Bulcke hurt, the expectation is defensive tackle Linden Gaydosh, 23, the first player taken in the 2013 CFL draft, will get an opportunity to play. The six-foot-four, 305-pound Gaydosh, a native Peace River, Alta., signed with Hamilton earlier this month after being released by the NFLs Carolina Panthers. The six-foot-two, 265-pound Hickman spent three seasons with Hamilton (2009-11) before joining the NFLs Indianapolis Colts in 2012. Hickman was a CFL all-star in 2011 after registering a CFL-high 13 sacks. Hickman registered 12 tackles in 12 games with the Colts. Hamilton also added international defensive lineman Adewale Ojomo to the practice roster while releasing international receiver LaMark Brown. Tony Gonzalez Jersey . A proposal approved by the committee says coaches would be allowed to challenge both called and potential defensive pass interference fouls under certain conditions. The move, still subject to final approval by the leagues board of governors who meets later this spring, would make the CFL the first football league to subject the penalty to video review. "Pass interference is one of the toughest calls to make," said Glen Johnson, the CFLs vice-president of officiating. "This gives us a second opportunity to get it right on a penalty that can have a great impact on a game." The committee also voted in favour of expanding the role of the leagues command centre to automatically review specific turnovers of fumbles lost and interceptions and detect illegal participation during a play. It approved a number of changes designed to further protect the safety of players, including eliminating low blocks below the waist, and clarifying the rules of illegal blows to an opponents neck or head. The committee also approved rule changes aimed at scoring and improving the flow of the game, such as allowing quarterbacks for each team to use their own team supplied Wilson footballs, provided they have met the "new ball" quality standard established by the league. Carr completed 17-of-34 attempts and tossed scores to James Jones and Jamize Olawale for the Raiders (3-12), who have a chance to match their win total of the past two seasons if they top the Broncos in Denver next week. Latavius Murray and Darren McFadden combined for 140 yards on 32 attempts, while Kenbrell Thompkins posted 90 yards on five receptions. Kyle Orton finished 32-of-49 for 329 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions for the Bills (8-7), who conclude the regular season at New England seven days from now. With the running game largely shackled to the tune of 13 yards on 13 attempts, Fred Jackson totaled 93 yards on nine catches, while Sammy Watkins, Scott Chandler and Robert Woods posted a TD catch apiece. Chandler and Orton combined for a 29-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth and Buffalo closed the gap to 19-17. The Raiders went ahead by a 26-17 count with 2:51 to go after Carr found Olawale from one yard out. That score was set up by a pair of big plays: Carrs 51-yard completion to Andre Holmes on 3rd-and-22 along with McFaddens 25-yard run to the one on a 2nd-and-6. On 3rd-and-21 from the 9-yard line, Brandian Ross stepped in front of an Orton pass at the Bills 33 and returned it seven yards. However, Janikowski failed to convert from 488 yards out and Buffalo had the ball back with 1:55 to play.dddddddddddd Woods was in the end zone to accept a 30-yard pass from Orton, and the extra point pulled the visitors to 26-24 with 1:09 showing. Charles Woodson recovered the onside kick and Carr knelt twice to run off the remaining time. Orton found Watkins for a 42-yard catch-and-run score to cap Buffalos initial drive of the contest. Carrs three-yard strike to Jones evened the score early in the second and Janikowskis 45-yard field goal just before the midway point gave Oakland a 10-7 edge. His 36-yard boot provided a 13-7 margin with 1:11 left before halftime, but Dan Carpenter nailed a 54-yard try on the final play for a three-point game. A 38-yard try from Janikowski ended the Raiders first series of the third pushed the hosts lead to 16-10, and he was good from 49 yards out later in the period. Game Notes Oakland has beaten Buffalo four straight times at home since moving back from Los Angeles prior to the 1995 season, and impTo put it bluntly, were spoiled. We really are. There have been 36 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships and Canada has won gold 15 times. No country has won more. We are used to greatness. We expect it as Canadian hockey fans. In the 10 years from 1988 to 1997, led by the likes of Eric Lindros, Scott Niedermayer and Jarome Iginla, Canada won eight gold medals, including five straight. Then, from 2005 to 2009, Canada won another five straight with teams featuring future NHL All-Stars in Dion Phaneuf, Carey Price and Sidney Crosby. But heres the rub: since that gold medal triumph in 2009 won by a team coached by the Pat Quinn and including PK Subban, John Tavares and Evander Kane, Canada has not won the tournament again. Sure, Canada has medaled in three of those four years (silvers in 2010 and 2011 and a bronze in 2012,) but for a country where hockey is king, you dont celebrate being anything but the best. Is it time to worry? Yes, there have been droughts before. Upon the WJHCs inception in 1977, Canada didnt win gold until its sixth year. Granted, in those days, Canada typically sent that years Memorial Cup champions to the tournament, rather than the teams filled with the nations best junior players that were used to seeing now. After Canadas five straight triumphs ending in 1997, the country went seven years without a gold. Even players the calibre of Vincent Lecavalier, Roberto Luongo and Rick Nash couldnt bring home the title. The nation fretted then and that unease is starting to return with this current dearth of titles. Is that fair, though? Every December, many assume these young men will bring home the gold. But if Brent Sutters team doesnt hear "O Canada" on January 5th of next year, it will be another six-year drought. As a Canadian hockey fan, how concerning is it that Canada hasnt won world junior gold recently? As always, its Your! Call. John Franklin-Myers Jersey . After thumping the New York Red Bulls 4-1 in their home opener on March 8, the Whitecaps secured a pair of road draws the last two weeks — 1-1 against Chivas USA and 0-0 against the New England Revolution. Catch the action live on TSN2 at 7pm et/4pm pt. Points away from home are always a bonus in MLS, but Robinson wasnt happy with certain aspects of the games as goalkeeper David Ousted was forced to bail out his teammates on a couple of occasions. With that in mind, the Whitecaps spent time this week getting back to basics in preparation for Saturdays home date against the Houston Dynamo. "We havent played enough football in the last two games that I wouldve liked," said Robinson. "We tried to break it down into segments of building from the back at the right times with a midfield player, breaking lines in the midfield and transitioning quickly. "The boys took the concepts very well." Robinson will hope the lessons stick as Houston (2-0-0) comes to town rested, having not played since a 1-0 victory over the Montreal Impact on March 15. "A very tough game," said Robinson. "I said to the guys in the changing room that theyre always in the playoffs, theyre a very strong team, well coached ... and its going to be a stern test for us." Vancouver is 2-2-0 against Houston all-time in MLS play, including a 3-1 home victory over the Dynamo at B.C. Place Stadium back in 2012. "Its always been a fortress for us," Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit said of his teams home field. "Throughout the years weve been able to pick up good results and well look to continue that. We know we have a tough opposition this week." Robinson, who was promoted to the top job in December after former head coach Martin Rennie was fired, has tempered expectations as he attempts to put his mark on the club and return the Whitecaps to the post-season. "I was never getting too carried away after the first game and Im not getting too down after two difficult away games," said the former Welsh international. "Its important we try and put our stamp on the game. Because were a young team with new players, its important we manage games better." That begins at the opening whistle, where the Whitecaps struggled the last two weeks to assert themselves early on the road. "A lot of teams in Major League Soccer play very well at home," said Robinson. "Its difficult to go on the road and play. The successful teams manage to find a way to win on the road. Were very good at home. We know that, and if we want to be competing for the playoffs weve got to be very good at home.ddddddddddddquot; One player the Dynamo will have to pay close attention to is Whitecaps striker Darren Mattocks, who has two assists this season, and three goals in two career games against Houston. "Mattocks is a fast guy," Dynamo defender Kofi Sarkodie told the clubs official website. "As long as we stick together as a back line as weve been doing and just kind of eliminate space in behind, I think we can nullify them throughout the match." DeMerit said the Whitecaps have had past success against the Dynamo because their style suits the matchup. "That means getting the ball down, getting our link play up and our combinations up front to create chances in our final third," said DeMerit. "The way you beat them is to pick them apart, and weve been able to do that most of the time." The Dynamo — who will face their first road test of the season — have yet to concede a goal this year, while striker Will Bruin already has three of his own to go along with an assist. "Strong team," said Ousted. "Good crosses and big guys up front that are good in the box, so we need to study up on those guys and be ready for it. Hopefully we can go in and dictate the play a little more than we did in the two away games." DeMerit will draw back into the lineup for Vancouver after a week of rest. Another change comes out of necessity, with Gershon Koffie expected to replace Nigel Reo-Coker in the centre of midfield. Reo-Coker suffered a bizarre injury on Sunday when he tripped over a bike rack in Vancouver and suffered a concussion and cuts to his face. Koffie, who has started 77 games for the Whitecaps since 2011, subbed in for Reo-Coker for the final 20 minutes against the Revolution for his first action of 2014. "Its always learning when youre on the bench," said Koffie. "Its not easy to be on the bench ... but also you have to learn from the bench." Robinson said hes pleased with Vancouvers unbeaten run to kick off the campaign but stressed its far too soon to be looking at the standings. At this point, the process is what concerns him. "We started off very well. Weve still got obviously a long way to go. Were unbeaten in three but its early stages," said Robinson. "Its important we progress every game and along the way well win games and well lose games. "But as long as were progressing in the right way and trying to put the style of play I want in the team, then were moving in the right direction." Note: The Whitecaps will honour Y.P. Lee before Saturdays game. The famed South Korean defender joined Vancouver in 2012 after a lengthy career in Europe and the Middle East before retiring in October.
