NEW ORLEANS -- Hello, Trevor. Farewell, AJ. Trevor Knights final start as a freshman sent Oklahomas expectations soaring into 2014 while bringing a sour end to AJ McCarrons otherwise charmed Alabama career. Knight completed a Sugar Bowl-record 32 passes for 348 yards and four touchdowns, and No. 11 Oklahoma took down the third-ranked Crimson Tide, 45-31 on Thursday night. "Its huge for our program, to get a win like this after no one gave us a chance all year," Knight said. "Weve got to ride this into next year. We cant settle with this. ... We want the big one." Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops declined to announce a starting quarterback before the game, and when Knight took the field on the Sooners first possession, Alabamas defenders couldnt have anticipated what was in store. Knights completion percentage entering the game was 52.2. He had completed 47 passes all season, before a breakout performance in which two of his TDs went for more than 40 yards. Oklahoma (11-2) needed him to play that well in the 80th Sugar Bowl, the first in which quarterbacks for both teams threw for more than 300 yards. The victory was a sweet one for Stoops, who last off-season called talk about the Southeastern Conference being the best league in college football "propaganda." "I have the utmost respect for Alabama, and I think this shows that obviously we can play with anybody," Stoops said. "So, enough of that. And I just watched them go through their entire conference and play pretty well. Im not pointing any fingers. But I think sometimes the comparisons arent necessarily very true." His Big 12 team vanquished an Alabama (11-2) squad that had been ranked No. 1 much of the past three seasons, winning the previous two national titles before its shot at a third straight was derailed by Auburn on the last play of the Iron Bowl in late November. But coach Nick Saban didnt buy the notion that his team, favoured by 16 points, was too deflated from its loss to Auburn to play up to its standard. "I actually thought that the players responded in practice pretty well for this game," Saban said. "We put over 500 yards of offence up. Somebody had to do something right. I dont think that we played as well on defence as were capable of or should have." McCarron passed for 387 yards and two TDs, but his two interceptions set up Oklahoma TDs, and his fumble, returned for a score in the final minute, sealed Alabamas first two-game skid since its Sugar Bowl loss to Utah in January 2009. "Put it all on me. I had two turnovers, (Oklahoma) ended up scoring 14 points, and we lost by 14," said McCarron, who won 36 of his first 38 games before losing his last two. "Its football. It happens. I wish it wouldnt have happened, but Ill definitely take the loss and definitely take the blame, because a lot of it is probably my fault." Freshman Derrick Henrys 43-yard run in the third quarter pulled Alabama to 31-24, and the Crimson Tide forced four punts while giving up only one first down in the third quarter. But Alabama was unable to add another score before the Sooners starting moving the ball again. Knight lofted a perfect pass to Lacoltan Bester for a 34-yard gain to the Alabama 9. Shortly after, Knight rolled left all the way to the sideline before rifling a touchdown strike to Sterling Shepard, making it a two-touchdown game again with 10:44 left. Henry, a 6-foot-3, 238-pound true freshman, pulled Alabama within in a score once more when he turned his first career reception into a tackle-shedding 61-yard TD with 6:22 still to go. But Oklahoma was able to burn several minutes off the clock, and then the Sooners registered their seventh sack when Eric Striker stripped McCarron, and Geneo Grissom returned it 8 yards for a score. Both teams entered the game with defences ranked in the top 15 nationally, but quarterback play dominated a first half highlighted by five passing plays of 43 yards or longer, three of which went for scores. Alabama took the opening kickoff and scored in four plays. McCarron hit Amari Cooper for 15 and 53 yards, and T.J. Yeldon ran it in from the 1. It appeared to be getting worse for the Sooners when Alabamas Landon Collins made a diving interception of Knights tipped pass, but Oklahoma got it right back when Gabe Lynn picked off McCarrons pass on the next play. One play later, Knight found Bester down the right sideline for a 45-yard score. The Sooners took their first lead when Knight found Jalen Saunders, who reached the ball across the goal line as he was being brought down. But McCarrons pinpoint pass over the middle to DeAndrew White for a 67-yard TD gave the Tide the lead right back early in the second quarter. The Sooners tied it at 17 on Michael Hunnicutts 47-yard field goal. Then cashed in on two more turnovers. Alabama appeared on the verge of a go-ahead score when Yeldon fumbled on the 8. The Sooners then reached mid-field, where they converted a fourth-and-1. On the next play, Knight hit Saunders in stride down the right sideline for a 43-yard score. McCarrons second interception, snagged by Zack Sanchez and returned to the 13, set up Shepards 13-yard TD around the right end. Facing another problem that could have derailed his football career, Texas A&Ms Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel has evaded serious punishment one more time. Manziel was suspended Wednesday for the first half of the Aggies season opener against Rice on Saturday for what the school said was an "inadvertent" violation of NCAA rules involving signing autographs. The quarterback was being investigated for allegedly accepting money for autographs from memorabilia brokers, a violation of NCAA rules that could have led to a much longer suspension. ESPN first reported the allegations against Manziel earlier this month. The latest problem isnt the first time off-the-field trouble has put Manziels career in jeopardy. Manziel was arrested last summer after a bar fight near campus and charged with disorderly conduct, possession of a fake ID and failure to identify himself to police. It was an incident that put him in danger of being suspended from school and left him having to earn the starting job in fall camp. Manziel admitted this June that he failed to identify himself to police following the altercation. As part of a plea deal, other charges against the 20-year-old, including disorderly conduct, were dismissed, and it looked as though Manziels trouble was behind him before the latest problems came to light. The news of Manziels suspension was the talk of Twitter on Wednesday, with many questioning the length of the suspension. Former NFL and MLB star Deion Sanders was incredulous at the brevity of Manziels suspension, after Dez Bryant was suspended for an entire season while at Oklahoma State after lying about having dinner with Sanders. "Can we investigate the investigators? (at)DezBryant got suspended a season 4 lying about a dinner that wasnt a violation & Manziel gets a half," Sanders tweeted soon after the ruling was made public. The decision also had a major impact in Las Vegas, where the odds of Manziels chances of repeating as a Heisman winner and Texas A&Ms chances of winning the national championship shifted dramatically. RJ Bell, the founder of sports betting website Pregame.com, said Manziels chances of winning the Heisman jumped from 12/1 to 6/1, and the teams shot at the title increased from 18/1 to 10/1. The penalty appears to have brought a quick end to an investigation that could have ruined the seventh-ranked Aggies season. The school issued a statement Wednesday saying it declared the Heisman winner ineligible and that the NCAA agreed to reinstate Manziel after he sits out the first half against the underdog Owls. "I am proud of the way both Coach Sumlin and Johnny handled this situation, with integrity and honesty," Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp said in the statement. "We all take the Aggie Code of Honor very seriously and there is no evidence that either the university or Johnny violated that code." According to the statement, Texas A&M and the NCAA "confirmed there is no evidence Manziel received money in exchange for autographs based on currently available information and statements by Manziel." Conditions for reinstatement include Manziel discussing his actions with teammates and A&M revising how it educates student-athletes about ssigning autographs.dddddddddddd "Student-athletes are often asked for autographs from fans, but unfortunately, some individuals sole motivation in seeking an autograph is for resale," said Kevin Lennon, NCAA vice-president of academic and membership affairs. "It is important that schools are cognizant and educate student-athletes about situations in which there is a strong likelihood that the autograph seeker plans to resell the items." Manziel likely will be replaced for the opening half by either junior Matt Joeckel or freshman Kenny Hill. Joeckel has thrown only 11 passes in his college career. Manziel became the first freshman to win the Heisman last season, setting numerous school and Southeastern Conference records while leading A&M to an 11-2 mark and a victory over No. 1 Alabama in its first season in the SEC. He followed that with a high-profile off-season of road trips to Las Vegas and the NBA Finals. Manziel got to meet Heat star LeBron James and rapper Drake, and he posted some Tweets that made headlines. His biggest misstep, however, came during the summer when he departed early from a quarterback camp for high school players run by the Manning family in Louisiana. Manziel said it was a mutual decision after he overslept and missed meetings and activities. Dat Nguyen, an All-America linebacker at Texas A&M in the 1990s and former assistant coach for the Aggies, lamented Manziels mistakes, but noted what hes done for the program. "Im a little bit disappointed with whats going on down there," Nguyen said recently. "Going into the season I thought this would be the year for A&M to win a national championship and this has been a distraction. He made a bad decision and hes just got to move on ... but overall the guy has put A&M back on the map." Former Texas A&M coach R.C. Slocum, who is now a special adviser to the schools president, has watched Manziels career with great interest and is looking forward to seeing how hell follow up his incredible first season. "This young man has been in a position that no one has ever been in," Slocum said before the suspension was announced. "Hes been a freshman and a 20-year-old winner of the Heisman Trophy, and hes done some great things with that and hes had a few things Im sure hed like to have a do-over with. And if I were advising him, I might have said, Thats probably not in your best interests to do that or say that or be there, but in terms of the upcoming season, Im as anxious as anybody to see what happens and see what the results are." Manziel was the main attraction at SEC Media Days, where he was peppered with questions but answered with the same cool and calm he often shows in the face of a pass rush. "I dont feel like Ive done anything thats catastrophic," Manziel said at the time. "Of course, Ive made my mistakes. Its time to grow up." The day before the Aggies reported for preseason practice, ESPN reported Manziel signed thousands of autographs for brokers in Texas, Florida and Connecticut, and cited unidentified sources who said Manziel was paid thousands for dollars for the signatures. Manziel has been off-limits to the media since news broke of the NCAA investigation, but has been practicing with the Aggies. ' ' '
